Abstract

This research, inserted in a broader project of exploring the sources and discussing the current Brazilian critical criminology, aims to map the scholarship development in the field, notably the classic literature and research of the 1970s in order to identify their theoretical guidelines and methodological perspectives. In this sense, based on bibliographic and documentary analyses, the paper seeks to identify in the first wave of the Brazilian criminological criticism (a) theoretical perspectives and (b) empirical findings, to then (c) discuss how gender and race issues were dealt with and (d) delimit the boundaries between criminology and criminal law at the general level of the criminal sciences. At last, the paper presents a synthesis of the foundational methodological guidelines and the current status of critical criminology in the country.
