Abstract

this article moves the question of agonistic in Western philosophical thought. The reflections that support this investigative path is based on the agon, in Athenian classical thinking, the praxis of war, in Nietzschean philosophy and the proposal of agonistic democracy, in the political philosophy of Mouffe (2006). Without pretending to make an exhaustive inventory on the subject, we propose an analysis of the repercussions to understand the space of dissent in the so-called modern Western democracies. To this end, we defend the point of view of the inability of the liberal model to determine the meaning and scope of the abstract noun democracy. Faced with the option of privileging the theoretical approach, we use the methodological tools of bibliographic analysis in specialized books, scientific articles, dissertation and thesis related to the topic. The contrast between Habermas’ proceduralism and agonistic democracy points to a phenomenon identified by Rancière (2005) as “democratic individualismâ€. Finally, we confirm the hypothesis initially presented, concluding on the need for dissent and the insufficiency of the liberal responses to serve as the only model for democracy.
