Abstract

Based on the general theory of social systems, which states that any social system can only function through communication, this paper describes and analyzes the relationship between functional differentiation, expectations, and demand inflation in the system of medicine, a constitutive system of modern society and, due to its characteristics, comparable to any other.

Evolutionarily, in the modern system of medicine, the demands directed at it have been expanding, broadening demands that had already presented important visible achievements, for example, in the prolongation of life expectancy and in the development of treatments for conditions not necessarily fatal. Precisely, this potential change guides reflection to observe the stability of communications in the medical system and see how it reacts to the conditions of possibility that enhance, limit, or recreate the phenomenon of demand inflation that, at present paradoxically, they thematize demands to satisfy demands.
