Abstract

In this article, based upon the conception of structural racism, we assume that black population is subject to racial inequality in Brazil. We question whether socio-spatial segregation, designed to create and maintain the place of black apparted from the place of the white, is an offshoot of structural racism. We tried to verify this hypothesis by understanding the organization of the urban space in order to subject the black population to ghettos, characterized, among other aspects, by the ethnic barrier and the poverty of its dwellers. Ghettos are historically represented by territories occupied by the black people, from slave quarters to slums and low income housing facilities. From our standpoint, we understand that the racial issue imposes major obstacles to black people in relation to work, income and education, as well as determines their living conditions and greater exposure to urban violence. We assert that racial inequality in Brazil, with an emphasis on socio-spatial segregation, based on a bibliographic review and data analysis by the Institute of Applied Economic Research and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics.
