Abstract

The present paper proposes a sociological description of what sustainability is, in order to employ it as a tool for an ecological observation of modern society. Thus, the aim of the research is to analyze how the structures of modern society can be more responsive to ecological demands. To fulfill this proposal, the research problem was: how can ecological complexity be operationalized in social systems under conditions of operative closure? The research method used was functional analysis, which consists of taking into consideration equivalent functional solutions in relation to the problem being analyzed. The research techniques employed were literature review, selected, respectively, by the criteria of relevance, accessibility and topicality; and categories and operative concepts. It is possible to observe the absence of a concept able to deal with the complexity of ecological issues in social systems, which can begin to be structured from the concept proposed here, in view of its generalization to be applied in terms of social systems.
