Market, transactions and institutions
the economic system in Luhmann's sociology

This paper advances the hypothesis that the systemic approach to the economy is capable of providing descriptive and explanatory alternatives both to the tradition of classical or neoclassical economics, based on conceptions of individual action and choice, and to Marxist sociology, based on the concept of “capitalism”. To this end, the text introduces the methodological and epistemological proposal of systemic functionalism and characterizes economic communications (transactions) based on their support in social systems (interactions, organizations and the functional system of the economy). It then addresses the distinction between the market (as the public sphere or internal environment of the economic system) and economic organizations, highlighting the differentiation between the real economy (production, trade and consumption) and its financial reflexivity. Finally, it presents and discusses the institutions of contract, property and taxation as structural couplings between economy and law.
